Swiss Society of Angiology

The Swiss Society of Angiology (SSA) was founded by specialists from various medical disciplines such as representatives from vascular surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, dermatology, pharmacology and physiology. The aim was to optimize diagnostics, therapy and research in the field of vascular diseases.

In Switzerland, Angiology was recognized as an independent specialty from the 1960s onwards. Thus, the SSA was founded on October 29th, 1961 in Basel with the aim of promoting research and development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods in the field of vascular diseases and to represent Swiss Angiology at national and international levels. Since 2012, the SSA closely collaborates with the Vascular Section of the Swiss Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (SGUM) and training courses as well as the examination for a certificate of proficiency in ultrasound have since been conducted jointly. Today, SSA is a member of the FMH and has more than 220 active members. The SSA is also a founding member of the European Society of Vascular Medicine (ESVM), which is existing since 2013. SSA is represented on its board and participates in its joint ESVM congresses. There is a long-standing cooperation with the German and Austrian Societies of Angiology.
